Emma Davies Photo

This week we put the questions to Emma Davies a published photographer who runs an online photo school

What got you into photography ?

Short answer: my dad. Longer answer: I loved being able to freeze time and bring home memories as a child, and have never lost that fascination.

How long have you been shooting for ?

40 years.

What do you most like to shoot ?

I don’t have a favourite “thing” to make photos of. I enjoy the challenge of making images that reflect my mood.

What camera do you shoot with and what else is in your bag ?

I use a Hasselblad 907X. I also have a Canon 5DIV system for when I get the urge to try some wildlife photography.

What’s the hardest part of working as a photographer ( if any ) ?

Maintaining the core of what makes you unique in the face of client preferences, changing fashions and advances in technology.

If money was no object, what would your dream camera be or are you happy with what you have ?

Very happy with the 907X. I’d love to upgrade the back to the 100C from the 50.

Do you have any photography inspirations and who are they ?

Sophie Calle, Cig Harvey, Justine Kurland, Fay Godwin, Margaret Bourke White, Kata Geibl, Lisa Barnard, Anastasia Samoylova.

Is there anywhere or anything that you haven’t photographed but you”d love to and why ?

I’m working on a train project at the moment. I’d love to photograph from the great Australian long-distance trains - The Ghan, The Indian Pacific and The Overland.

What advice would you give to a female photographer just starting out ?

Don’t try to be like anyone else, men or otherwise. Let the photographers who want to hike miles and talk gear have it. Carve your own path - what photographs could only be made by you?

If you could be any animal / mythical creature, what would it be and why ?

A raven. This doesn’t necessarily reflect well on me, but apparently they can hold a grudge for years and I have to admire that.
