Daniela Tommasi Photography

This week we put the questions to Daniela Tommasi a Sports, Aerial Drone and Commercial Photographer based in Western Australia.

What got you into photography ?

My interest in photography started as a teenager, when I was still living in Brazil. I took a few short courses on photography and got hooked on it. It turned into a hobby that only grew as I started traveling to different countries around the world. I eventually moved to Australia and started working with photography part-time, which then gradually transitioned into a full-time freelance photography career.

How long have you been shooting for ?

I have been shooting professionally for more than 12 years, and have been working as a full-time photographer for the past 6 years.

What do you most like to shoot ?

I love shooting sports, travel and aerial (drone) photography.

What's the most important lesson you've learned in your career so far ?

Practice, practice, practice. Your photography will only get better the more you do it. Cultivate relationships and also a passion for learning and experimenting.

What's the hardest part of working as a photographer ( if any ) ?

For me, personally, the business side of it - office work, quotes, bookkeeping. It's so much more interesting to be out in the field getting the actual shots! :)

If money was no object, what would your dream camera be or are you happy with what you have ?

I am happy with what I have - it has never stopped me from getting the shots that I want. Though if money was not an issue, I'd probably get the top of the range camera and drone for the latest features. New gear is also getting lighter, which is always a good thing, especially if you do a lot of walking and traveling on the job.

Do you have any photography inspirations and who are they ?

I admire the work of many photographers, in different genra - Sebastiao Salgado (for portraits), Art Wolfe (wildlife), Hordur (aerial drone), Ignacio Palacios (travel) to name a few.

Is there anywhere or anything that you haven't photographed but you"d love to and why ?

There are many places I've never photographed or been to. And I am an avid traveler, but it is impossible to cover it all (maybe even in a lifetime).
Some places still on my list are Galapagos and Antarctica. There are also many places I have already been to that I'd love to go back.

What advice would you give to a photographer regardless of gender just starting out ?

Take every opportunity to practice and learn new skills. Put yourself out of your comfort zone sometimes - it is a great way to learn new tricks.
There is so much information available out there - videos, books, websites - and don't restrict yourself to just photography. Composition and storytelling can be learned from many different subjects and sources.

What's the one question you wish I'd asked you and how would you have answered ?

Where can you find some of my work?
